Thrashers, Pens both try to get back in win column

Hockey Betting Lines

11/20/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - A pair of teams who recently had long winning streaks snapped will meet tonight in Atlanta, as the Thrashers welcome the Pittsburgh Penguins to Philips Arena.

The Penguins had won six straight before being dealt a shootout loss Tuesday evening against Minnesota, while Atlanta had a five-game winning streak halted Sunday evening in Philadelphia.

Pittsburgh's meeting with the Wild was the final test of a three-game homestand for the Pens. Minnesota earned the 3-2 decision at Mellon Arena as Marek Zidlicky netted the game-winning shootout tally. Niklas Backstrom made 24 saves for the Wild and also stopped each of Pittsburgh's three shootout attempts.

Matt Cooke scored the lone goal for the Penguins, who lost for the first time since a 4-1 setback in Phoenix on October 30.

Evgeni Malkin also had his 13-game point streak halted in the setback. Malkin, who has registered a point in 16 of 18 games this season, was held without a point for the first time since an October 14 test against Philadelphia.

Dany Sabourin got the start between the pipes and also made 24 saves as Marc- Andre Fleury was sidelined with an unspecified lower-body injury for Pittsburgh. Fleury did not travel with the team to Atlanta so Sabourin will get the start again tonight with John Curry taking on the backup role.

Fleury could be ready to return for Saturday's home game against Vancouver.

The Penguins, who are playing three of their next four games on the road, are 5-2-1 as the visiting team this year.

Atlanta went into Philadelphia on Sunday with a chance to set a franchise record with its sixth straight victory, but instead the Flyers won their 12th meeting in a row against the Thrashers. Simon Gagne registered a goal and two assists to lift the Flyers to the 4-3 decision at the Wachovia Center.

Erik Christensen, Slava Kozlov and Bryan Little each notched a goal while Ilya Kovalchuk had two assists. Little extended his point-scoring streak to six straight games and has four goals and five assists during the run. The scoring streak is tied with Toronto's Ian White and Nicklas Backstrom of Washington for the longest current stretch in the NHL.

Johan Hedberg made 28 saves for the Thrashers, who are playing the first of two straight on home ice tonight. Atlanta is 5-3-0 as the host this year and has won three in a row at Philips Arena.

Pittsburgh has won three of its last five tests against the Thrashers, but has dropped three straight in Atlanta.

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup

September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com.  The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.

Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to  name a  few.  Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR.  They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.

The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer.  Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
